Yomogi leaves contain numerous antioxidants with potent anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting properties. Every 5th May, the Japanese embark to the countryside to collect fresh shōbu irises and yomogi leaves in the 1,400-year-old tradition of kusuri-gari (medicine hunt). The tradition began in the Asuka period (538-710 AD) during the reign of Empress Suiko, Japan’s first female monarch who was an accomplished herbalist.
