What it is

The Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) Panel from Immunosciences Lab is a blood draw test that measures the levels of antibodies to Epstein Barr Virus.

How it helps

Epstein Barr Virus may play a significant role in contributing towards inflammation and autoimmune disorders. High levels of antibodies may suggest autoimmune reactivity which, if not addressed, can eventually lead to the development of autoimmune disease.

Epstein Barr Virus infection can play a role in the pathogenesis of many systemic autoimmune conditions, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease and many more. This is due to molecular mimicry between Epstein Barr Virus antigens and human tissue proteins.

This mimicry occurs when antibodies produced against viral antigens also attack the body's own tissues. It is thought that subsequent viral infections further aggravate the disease by activating the immune response against viral and self antigens.

This test is recommended for those who are genetically predisposed to autoimmune disease, or who have a history of exposure to environmental risk factors (such as infections from Epstein Barr Virus).
